The scientific objectives set by the laboratory reflect the major societal challenges of the ecological transition, which include the development of eco-friendly construction materials and technologies that ensure the durability of structures and manage the risks associated with natural deterioration and changing loads.

The applied nature of its scientific research allows LMC2 to maintain close connections with the industrial sector. LMC2 promotes its research by contributing to the development of national technical guidelines on construction materials and structural repair, as well as to the development of national and international standards. These contributions provide substantial support for innovation.

The scientific approach implemented focuses on engineering sciences and aims to develop performance-based engineering for materials and composite systems used in construction. This approach incorporates the requirements of sustainable development to maximize the performance and durability of civil engineering structures. The objective is the design of innovative solutions which combine efficiency, strength, and environmental sustainability. The research methodology uses a multiscale approach that enables the prediction of material and structural behavior during fabrication and in service, under coupled loads over long periods. To predict the behavior of materials in complex and varied systems, interactions across different scales—from the smallest (micro or meso) to the largest (macro)—are modeled.

The research is organized around two thematic axes in order to guarantee the laboratory’s clear visibility on a both national and international level, while focusing research questions on solutions responding more effectively to new societal challenges and the demands of the ecological transition.

LMC2 aspires to be a major actor in research on civil engineering materials and structures.
